FAQ: Chinese Herbal Medicine
How do you choose which herbs go into my formula?

Creating a personalized herbal formula begins with a thorough assessment of health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and overall constitution. Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostic methods—such as pulse assessment, tongue observation, and discussion of patterns in the body’s function—are used to identify areas of imbalance.
Based on this evaluation, specific powdered herbal extracts are selected to work together and address the root cause of the concerns. Each herb is carefully chosen not only for its therapeutic effects, such as warming or cooling, improving circulation, or supporting the health and function of targeted organs, but also to fit the patient’s overall health profile and specific complaints. There is a synergistic effect between the herbs, so groups of herbs may have stronger or even additional effects beyond what the herbs do individually.
Depending on the individual, herbs may also be added to boost energy and address fatigue or to relieve tension and promote relaxation, ensuring that the final formula is fully tailored to the person, helping restore balance, support healing, and enhance overall wellness.
How long does it take to see results from Chinese Herbal Medicine?
The time it takes to notice results varies depending on the condition, its duration, and the individual’s overall health. Some people may experience improvements within a few days to weeks, while chronic or more complex conditions often require several weeks of consistent use. Because herbal medicine works by addressing the root cause, regular use over time usually produces the most lasting benefits.
Are there any side effects or interactions with other medications?
Chinese Herbal medicine is generally well-tolerated, especially when formulas are tailored to the individual. Side effects are uncommon but may include mild digestive changes or temporary adjustments as the body responds to treatment. It’s important to inform your provider about any medications or supplements you are taking so that potential interactions can be evaluated and formulas adjusted safely.
Can Chinese herbal medicine be used alongside acupuncture or other treatments?
Chinese herbal medicine is often used in combination with acupuncture and other therapies for enhanced results. Herbs can complement acupuncture by supporting the body’s healing, addressing root causes, and improving overall vitality. Integrating multiple approaches allows for a holistic treatment plan tailored to each individual’s unique health needs.
If I am vegetarian or vegan, can I take Chinese herbs?
Yes, most Chinese herbal formulas can be adapted for vegetarian or vegan patients. While some traditional formulas may include animal-derived ingredients, alternatives made entirely from plant-based powdered extracts are available. During your consultation, any formulas can be customized to meet your dietary preferences without compromising their effectiveness or therapeutic benefits.
How are herbs administered?

At Vancouver Acupuncture, for convenience, we provide herbal formulas in powdered extract form, produced under strict GMP) regulations to ensure quality and safety. The herbal powder is mixed into a small cup of warm water and taken three times per day, providing consistent support to help correct imbalances and reduce symptoms over time. Regular, consistent dosing is important—skipping doses or taking the herbs less frequently can reduce their effectiveness.
Is Chinese herbal medicine covered by health insurance?
Chinese herbal medicine is not covered by health insurance and cannot be paid for using HSA or FSA accounts. Herbal medicine is a separate service from acupuncture and is priced according to each patient’s individualized plan. Recommended treatments and costs will be discussed during your first visit so you know exactly what to expect.
